All my life I have always wanted to travel and to see the world, and I always imagined that I would in the future. However, the opportunity had never presented itself until now. The main motivation for me was that I would finally get out of the United States and see a new country, which felt long overdue, as I am quickly approaching the age of 22. This specific project felt like the best opportunity for me because not only would I be able to travel to Central America, but I would be able to gain valuable knowledge in my field of study, which is wildlife biology.
In the months preceding this trip, I felt a little bit nervous because I did not know what to expect, as I had never been this far from the home which I am so use to, and I had never experienced such a different climate and environment. I also felt excitement because I was ready to put forth my efforts and volunteer my time to help the sea turtles and the community. I have volunteered for many years and many different organizations at home, however this is different.
It takes much more of a commitment to travel many hours and countries away from home, but I feel that it makes it that much more rewarding. It feels goo to make a difference in another country because it allows me to learn about that country and gain new perspective on life. Even aside from the actual volunteer work I have already learned so much about Costa Rica because of the people we have met, the food we have eaten and the cities and villages that we have seen.
Travelling to volunteer consists of more than just the work that’s needed because it requires a complete lifestyle change in the process. I think this is important because it helps me get out of my every day routine and learn about myself at the same time. It’s hard to gain insights at home when life seems so mundane. Here, sometimes I don’t know what to expect next but it’s exciting to have that kind of surprise every day when I wake up in the morning. And anything is possible. This trip has only solidified my desire to get out and explore, and to see other parts of the world and help where I can. Being exposed to different ways of life is humbling, but it also allows me to appreciate my home more as well. After just one week in Costa Rica, I have already learned so much and I really hope to do more projects like this and volunteer in other countries in the future.
